McAllister House Museum

McAllister House, a charming brick and limestone Gothic-style cottage, is one of the first substantial dwellings constructed in Colorado Springs. Built a year and a half after the city was founded, when most houses were of vernacular frame construction, it is the oldest house still standing.

General William Jackson Palmer, founder of the city, chose Major Henry McAllister, his longtime military and business associate, to be the Director for the Colorado Springs Company.

The Colonial Dames have authentically restored the house. Details include original marble fireplaces, floor to ceiling pocket windows, which slide up into the walls making nice doorways to the verandas, and furnishings appropriate to the period.

In 1960, The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Colorado rescued the house from destruction and has owned and operated it since that time.

Open: May through August, Wednesday through Saturday:
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday: Noon to 4:00 p.m., September through April, Thursday through Saturday: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Closed: July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, and January
