This film series will examine the ways in which filmmakers and historians envision and shape our national past and our understanding of American history. In some instances, filmmakers are self-conscious in their efforts to shape historical knowledge. Similarly, professional historians influence our understanding of the past. Although issues of art and methodology are what separate their efforts, filmmakers and historians are ultimately trying to achieve the same goal. Yet to understand some of the differences we must ask questions such as: Why do people study the past? Is history written only by professional academics, or can non-academics tell histories as well? Is history best told as narrative like a novel or film, or as social science that uses methods and data to explain the past as accurately as possible? This discussion will be led by CC History Professor Bryan Rommel-Ruiz.
