Following the American Revolution, woven coverlets became expressions of American liberty. Embellished with eagles, stars and patriotic mottos, these coverlets, often in red, white, and blue, proclaimed America's independence from English colonial rule. More than bed coverings, these woven works of art were created by both women and men as prized heirlooms. In the twenty-first century they serve as inspirations to contemporary weavers.
